پيدايی نوروز
درباره ريشه های نوروز در آثار فارسی روايت های گوناگونی آمده است. شاعران و نويسندگان سده های چهارم و پنجم هجری بويژه در دوره غزنوی از پيدايی نوروز در زمان پادشاهی جمشيد جم ياد می کنند. شعر فردوسی در شاهنامه از همه گوياتر است:به نوروز نو شاه گيتی فروز
بر آن تخت بنشست فيروز روز
بزرگان به شادی بياراستند
می و رود و رامشگران خواستند
اما محمد جرير طبری در تاريخ معروف خود ضمن تأکيد بر آنکه اين آيين از دوره پادشاهی جمشيد به يادگار مانده، نوروز را سر آغاز دادگری جمشيد دانسته است. « جمشيد علما را فرمود که آن روز که من بنشستم به مظالم، شما نزد من باشيد تا هرچه در او داد و عدل باشد بنماييد، تا من آن کنم، و آن روز که به مظالم نشست روز هرمز ( ۱ ) بود از ماه فروردين. پس آن روز رسم کردند.»
ابوريحان بيرونی نيز در “آثارالباقيه” نوروز را از روزگار جمشيد بر می شمارد اما می گويد نوروز از آن روزی آغاز شد که جمشيد به آسمان پرواز کرد. « چون جمشيد برای خود گردونه بساخت، در اين روز بر آن سوار شد و جن و شياطين او را در هوا حمل کردند و به يک روز از کوه دماوند به بابل آمد و مردم برای ديدن اين امر در شگفت شدند و اين روز را عيد گرفته و برای يادبود آن روز در تاب می نشينند و تاب می خورند ».
اما گرديزی معاصر ابوريحان و از برجستگان دوره غزنوی در “زين الاخبار” می نويسد جمشيد جشن نوروز را به شکرانه اينکه خداوند « گرما و سرما و بيماری و مرگ را از مردمان گرفت و سيصد سال بر اين جمله بود » برگزار کرد و هم در اين روز بود که « جمشيد بر گوساله ای نشست و به سوی جنوب رفت به حرب ديوان و سياهان و با ايشان حرب کرد و همه را مقهور کرد ».
در نوروزنامه، منسوب به عمر خيام آمده که جمشيد به مناسبت باز آمدن خورشيد به برج حمل، نوروز را جشن گرفت.
« سبب نهادن نوروز آن بوده است که آفتاب را دو دور بود، يکی آنکه هر سيصد و شصت و پنج شبان روز و ربعی از شبان روز به اول دقيقه حمل باز آمد و به همان روز که رفته بود بدين دقيقه نتواند از آمدن، چه هر سال از مدت همی کم شود؛ و چون جمشيد، آن روز دريافت [ آن را ] نوروز نام نهاد و جشن و آيين آورد و پس از آن پادشاهان و ديگر مردمان بدو اقتدا کردند ».
تا اينجا پيداست که همه کارهای نيکو به جمشيد منسوب است، و هر يک علت جشن نوروز را يکی از کارهای نيک او بر می شمارد و تنها اين عمر خيام است که موضوع را به گاه شماری ايرانی نسبت می دهد.
اما از بين معاصران صدرالدين عينی نويسنده نامدار تاجيک در “يادداشتها”ی خود که به کوشش سعيدی سيرجانی در تهران منتشر شده است نيز به باز آمدن خورشيد به برج حمل اشاره می کند. وی ضمن اشاره به برگزاری جشن نوروز در تاجيکستان و ازبکستان می نويسد:
« … به سبب اول بهار، در وقت به حرکت در آمدن تمام رستنی ها، راست آمدن اين عيد، طبيعت انسان هم به حرکت می آيد. از اينجاست که تاجيکان می گويند: « حمل، همه چيز در عمل ». در حقيقت اين عيد به حرکت آمدن کشت های غله، دانه و سر شدن ( آغاز ) کشت و کار و ديگر حاصلات زمينی است که انسان را سير کرده و سبب بقای حيات او می شود ».
به هر حال آغاز نوروز در بيشتر متون کهن با آغاز پادشاهی همزمان پنداشته می شود اما ترديدی نيست که نوروز پيش از تشکيل حکومت های پادشاهی در ايران جشن گرفته می شده است چنانکه ابوريحان تأکيد می کند « آن روز را که روز تازه ای بود جمشيد عيد گرفت، اگرچه پيش از آن هم نوروز بزرگ و معظم بود ».
در اينجا ذکر اين نکته ضرورت دارد که اگرچه برگزاری عمومی و شکوهمند نوروز مختص ايران و حوزه فرهنگی و تمدنی ايران است اما در نقاط ديگر نيز اين روز را جشن می گرفته اند. چنانکه از بين معاصران، محمود روح الامينی در « آيين ها و جشن های کهن در ايران امروز » می نويسد : « گذشته از ايران، در آسيای صغير و يونان، برگزاری جشن ها و آيين هايی را در آغاز بهار سراغ داريم. در منطقه ليدی و فری ژی [ منطقه شمال غرب آسيای صغير ] بر اساس اسطوره های کهن، به افتخار سی بل، الهه باروری و معروف به مادر خدايان، و الهه آتيس، جشنی در هنگام رسيدن خورشيد به برج حمل و هنگام اعتدال بهاری برگزار می شد. مورخان از برگزاری آن در زمان اگوست شاه در تمامی سرزمين فری ژی و يونان و ليدی و آناتولی خبر می دهند. بويژه از جشن و شادی بزرگ در سه روز ۲۵ تا ۲۸ مارس ( ۴ تا ۷ فروردين ).
۱ - در ايران باستان روزهای هفته نامی نداشت اما برای هر روز ماه نامی گذاشته بودند. هرمز ( اورمزد ) نام روز اول هر ماه بود. پس روز هرمز از ماه فروردين يعنی روز اول فروردين.
نام روزهای ديگر ماه بدين قرار است: ۲ = بهمن، ۳ = اردی بهشت، ۴ = شهريور، ۵ = سپندارمذ، ۶ = خورداد، ۷ = امرداد، ۸ = دی به آذر، ۹ = آذر، ۱۰ = آبان، ۱۱ = خور، ۱۲ = ماه، ۱۳ = تير، ۱۴ = گوش ( گئوش )، ۱۵ = دی به مهر، ۱۶ = مهر، ۱۷ = سروش، ۱۸ رشن، ۱۹ = فروردين، ۲۰ = ورهرام، ۲۱ = رام، ۲۲ باد، ۲۳ = دی به دين، ۲۴ = دين، ۲۵ = اِرد، ۲۶ = اشتاد، ۲۷ = آسمان، ۲۸ = زامياد، ۲۹ = مانتره سپند، ۳۰ = انارام.

همی زد چشمک آن نرگس به سوی گل که “خندانی ؟” بدو گفتا که “خندانم، که یار اندر کنار آمد”
صنوبر گفت: “ره سخت آسان شد به فضل حق” که هر برگی به ره ُبرّی چو تیغ آبدار آمد
ز ترکستان آن دنیا بنه ی ترکان زیبارو به هندوستان آب و گل به امر شهریار آمد
ببین کان لکلک گویا بر آمد بر سر منبر که “ای یاران آن کاره، صلا، که وقت کار آمد”
